In a move to minimize disruptions during the winter months, Indian Railways has announced the cancellation of three trains originating from or passing through Chandigarh from January 2 to January 8, 2024, due to anticipated foggy weather conditions. This decision is part of the railway department’s ongoing efforts to ensure smooth operations and avoid delays that could affect other long-distance services.
The affected trains include:
- Chandigarh-Amritsar Express (12411-12)
- Hemkunt Express (14609-10), which operates between Yog Nagari Rishikesh and SVDK Katra
- Amritsar Junction-Dehradun Express (14631-32)
Details of Cancellations:
- Chandigarh-Amritsar Express (12411-12): Cancelled from January 2 to January 8.
- Hemkunt Express (14609): Cancelled from January 3 to January 8.
- Hemkunt Express (14610): Cancelled from January 2 to January 7.
- Amritsar Junction-Dehradun Express (14632): Cancelled from January 2 to January 7.
- Dehradun-Amritsar (15631): Cancelled from January 3 to January 8.
The Ambala Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Mandeep Singh Bhatia, explained that the cancellations are a precautionary measure. Reports from past winters show consistent delays in these particular train routes due to dense fog. By cancelling these services in advance, the railway department aims to prevent the delays from cascading and affecting other critical long-distance trains.
Why the Cancellations Are Necessary:
Foggy weather is a frequent issue for train services during the winter months, especially from December to February. Trains running through northern regions, including Chandigarh, have historically faced delays because of poor visibility and slower speeds during these conditions. The early cancellation of certain trains helps ensure that longer, more crucial services can operate on time without delays.
Earlier this year, in November 2024, a total of 10 trains were also cancelled in anticipation of similar weather challenges. These proactive measures highlight the railway department’s commitment to maintaining the safety and efficiency of the Indian Railways network during the challenging winter season.
Impact on Passengers:
Affected passengers are advised to make alternate travel arrangements. The Indian Railways has provided information about the cancellations through official channels, ensuring passengers can stay informed and plan accordingly.
This initiative forms part of a larger strategy to improve operational efficiency during the peak fog season, ensuring minimal disruption to passengers and keeping the railway network running smoothly.
