Chandigarh Leads with 2,085 AI-Driven CCTV Cameras to Automate Traffic Violation Detection

Jan 2, 2025

Chandigarh has made significant strides in enhancing its traffic management system by installing 2,085 Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven CCTV cameras across the city. These cameras automatically detect and record traffic violations, setting a new standard for other cities in India.

In 2024, the Chandigarh Traffic Police issued a total of 9.85 lakh challans, collecting Rs 23.03 crore in fines, more than double the previous year’s revenue. Of these, 8.41 lakh challans were generated using the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) cameras, while the remaining were issued manually by traffic personnel.

Key Traffic Violations Recorded

  • Red-light jumping was the most common violation, accounting for 4,97,297 challans.
  • Over-speeding led to 1,46,942 fines, and zebra crossing violations resulted in 1,10,711 fines.
  • Additionally, 84,802 challans were issued for riding without helmets, and 26,080 fines for wrong parking.

The AI-driven CCTV system at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) in Sector 17 uses an advanced network of cameras to monitor 47 traffic junctions and ensure efficient law enforcement. 250 kilometers of fibre-optic network connects the cameras, covering 267 locations.

Unlike traditional systems where operators manually review footage, Chandigarh’s AI cameras automatically detect and record violations. This level of automation allows for faster and more accurate detection of offences without the need for real-time monitoring by operators.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Sumer Pratap Singh, emphasized that this technology ensures that no traffic violation goes unnoticed, as most challans are automatically generated through the AI-driven system. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ram Gopal, added that the round-the-clock monitoring ensures efficient handling of violations, with over 30 operators actively tracking and issuing fines during each shift.

Chandigarh’s innovative use of AI for traffic monitoring demonstrates the city’s commitment to using technology to enhance public safety and ensure accountable driving behavior.
