Horror in Sector 40-D
A Panjab University (PU) employee allegedly killed his 65-year-old mother in Sector 40-D, Chandigarh, on Diwali morning. Ravinder Singh Negi (40) reportedly stabbed his mother 16 times with a kitchen knife. She died instantly at the scene.
Neighbours Raise Alarm
Neighbour Akash Bains, who reported the case, said he was having tea when he heard loud screams from Ravinder’s house. He and other neighbours rushed to the home but found the main door locked.
“We climbed through the terrace and saw Sushila lying in a pool of blood. Moments later, Ravinder came out with his clothes soaked in blood,” Akash said.
Akash immediately called 112, and police arrived within minutes. The kitchen knife used in the attack was recovered from the house.
Accused Arrested Quickly
Ravinder fled the scene but police caught him in Sonepat, Haryana, a few hours later. Authorities remanded him to judicial custody at Model Jail, Burail.
Police registered a murder case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Sector 39 police station. Investigators will also assess Ravinder’s mental health as part of the inquiry.
Troubled Past of the Accused
Sushila had been living with Ravinder for several months. Her husband, Late Rajinder Singh Negi, passed away years ago. Her elder son lives separately in Sector 41 and works for a private company.
Police said Ravinder’s wife and daughter left him six months ago due to his violent and unstable behavior. He had mental health issues, including fits and erratic outbursts, and had been admitted to health facilities before. Sushila often sought help from priests and faith healers to improve his condition.
The Fatal Argument
On Diwali morning, a heated argument broke out between Ravinder and his mother. In a fit of rage, he grabbed a kitchen knife and attacked her repeatedly. She died instantly.
Police continue to investigate the trigger for the attack and Ravinder’s mental state at the time of the crime.
