The Delhi High Court has granted interim relief to Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, ordering strict action against the unauthorized use of her name, image, and persona.
The court ruled that such misuse not only causes financial harm but also damages her dignity and reputation.
Court Grants Interim Injunction in Aishwarya Rai Case
Justice Tejas Karia passed an order barring multiple websites, companies, and individuals from exploiting Aishwarya Rai’s identity through digital platforms, merchandise, or AI-generated tools such as deepfakes and morphed content.
The court said the unauthorized use of celebrity identity — including name, image, signature, or likeness — amounts to violation of personality rights, moral rights, and publicity rights.
Ban on AI-Generated & Fake Content
The order specifically prohibits:
-
AI-generated deepfakes, morphed images, and manipulated videos
-
Unauthorized use of her persona for advertisements, merchandise, or endorsements
-
Creation and circulation of false online content implying her involvement in unrelated products or ventures
The bench also directed Google LLC and various e-commerce platforms to take down flagged URLs within 72 hours. The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has also been asked to issue blocking directions.
Violations Highlighted by Aishwarya Rai’s Lawyers
Senior Advocate Sandeep Sethi, along with his legal team, presented examples of unauthorized misuse:
-
Fake merchandise including mugs, T-shirts, and drinkware
-
Fraudulent firms like Aishwarya Nation Wealth falsely naming her as Chairperson
-
Circulation of obscene and AI-morphed content damaging her reputation
The court acknowledged that such misuse creates confusion, dilutes goodwill, and falsely implies celebrity endorsement.
Next Hearing Scheduled in 2026
The matter will now be heard on January 15, 2026, but until then, the interim injunction remains in force, protecting Aishwarya Rai’s image, dignity, and brand value.
The court also clarified that Aishwarya Rai and her legal team may continue submitting specific URLs for takedown, ensuring broader protection against misuse.
Why This Case Matters
This ruling highlights the growing concern over AI deepfakes, online impersonation, and digital fraud involving celebrities. With Bollywood icons like Aishwarya Rai being targeted, the judgment sets an important precedent for protecting celebrity rights in India.
