Aug 28, 2025

Chandigarh is set to witness a major transformation in its tourism landscape with the launch of the Chandigarh Tourism Master Plan, aimed at creating world-class attractions, modern amenities, and immersive experiences for visitors.

Reviving Le Corbusier’s Vision: The Museum of Knowledge

One of the most anticipated projects is the ‘Museum of Knowledge’, a concept originally designed by Le Corbusier but never built. Planned at the Capitol Complex, the museum will serve as a center for innovation, research, and global knowledge exchange.

“The museum will blend heritage with futuristic learning spaces, developed according to Corbusier’s original plans. Experts, including architects and art historians, will guide the project,” said a senior UT official.

The project will seek UNESCO approval, as the Capitol Complex is a World Heritage Site, ensuring international recognition and adherence to heritage standards.

World-Class Concert Centre in Sarangpur

Chandigarh will also get a 25-acre concert centre in Sarangpur, designed to host large-scale concerts and international events.

  • Capacity: 35,000 people

  • Parking: 6,300 cars

  • Features: Stage with ramp and ‘fan pit’

  • Estimated Cost: Rs 35 crore

Construction is expected to begin in the next financial year, offering a global platform for cultural and music events.

Natural History Museum Upgrade

The Natural History Museum in Sector 10 will undergo a major modernization to showcase India’s biodiversity, geology, and evolution of life.

  • 7D-360° immersive experiences

  • Helicopter simulator for virtual exploration of prehistoric life

  • Interactive galleries, children’s zones, and scientific installations

  • Static museum relocated to the second floor

This upgrade aims to create a family-friendly educational attraction that combines learning with entertainment.

Digital Museum at Le Corbusier Centre

A Digital Museum in Sector 19 will use Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) to tell the story of Le Corbusier’s life and architectural legacy.

  • Estimated Cost: Rs 15 crore

  • Focus: Immersive experience for tourists and architecture enthusiasts

The project has already been submitted to the center for approval and will start after authorization.

Upgraded Facilities at Major Attractions

Chandigarh’s Rock Garden, Dhanas Lake, and city parks will see major improvements to enhance visitor experience.

  • Rock Garden: Beautified entrances, new signage, theme-based cafe

  • Dhanas Lake: New parking, pathways, seating arrangements, and landscaping

Promoting Cultural, Eco, and Adventure Tourism

The tourism master plan also emphasizes the creation of cultural circuits, integrating heritage, nature, and modern attractions. Focus areas include:

  • Eco-tourism: Preserving natural beauty while promoting sustainable travel

  • Adventure tourism: Activities for thrill-seekers and outdoor enthusiasts

  • Cultural tourism: Celebrating Chandigarh’s history, art, and architecture

These initiatives aim to position Chandigarh as a top destination for domestic and international tourists, boosting the city’s cultural and economic footprint.
