Chandigarh to Fix Mismatched Speed Signs After Survey Reveals Major Gaps
Speed Sign Errors Found on Chandigarh Roads
Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav has ordered urgent correction of speed limit signboards across Chandigarh. The signs displayed on several roads don’t match the officially notified limits. This mismatch poses risks to commuters and traffic enforcement.
Road Safety Meeting Highlights Key Issues
The problem was discussed during a District Road Safety Committee meeting. DC Yadav chaired the session. The goal was to address key issues in traffic safety and road management.
A detailed survey, known as the Speed Limit Mapping Project, was reviewed. The project was conducted by Lepton Software in partnership with Google Maps.
Major Survey Findings
The project aimed to show accurate speed limits on digital navigation apps. The team verified speed data from city roads.
Here are the key results:
-
Out of 1,131 roads, 637 had incorrect speed signs.
-
178 stretches had no speed signs at all.
-
175 areas lacked signs for two-wheelers.
Authorities Asked to Fix Signage Immediately
The DC directed the Engineering Department, Traffic Police, and other civic agencies to act immediately. They must replace wrong signs and install missing ones.
“Accurate signs help keep roads safe and support law enforcement,” said DC Yadav.
Speed-Calming Measures Coming to Jan Marg
To slow down traffic in busy areas, the DC instructed the UT Chief Engineer to install 15 mm raised strips on Sector 9/10 Jan Marg. This work will begin after the monsoon season.
Liquor Vend at Dhanas Light Point to Be Removed
DC Yadav also flagged a liquor shop at Dhanas light point, calling it unsafe. The area is busy and often congested. He asked the Excise Department to remove this location from the next auction list.
Conclusion
Chandigarh will soon see safer, better-marked roads. The DC’s instructions aim to fix traffic issues, improve sign visibility, and protect road users.
