🎼 Research Reveals the Sitar’s Influence in Bollywood’s Golden Era
A new study by Punjabi University, Patiala, has revealed the important role of the sitar in shaping Hindi film music from the 1950s to the 1970s. This period is known as Bollywood’s golden era.
The research was carried out by Vanita under the guidance of Professor Nivedita Uppal from the Department of Music. It focuses on how sitar tunes added depth and beauty to classic Hindi songs.
📚 First Study of Its Kind
Professor Nivedita Uppal said that this is the first research project that deeply studies the use of the sitar in Hindi film music.
She explained that while singers and music directors often gain fame, instrumentalists — especially sitar players — rarely receive the recognition they deserve.
“This study gives long-overdue credit to those artists who brought emotion and life to our most loved songs,” she said.
🌟 Honoring Famous and Unsung Sitar Artists
The research honors both legendary sitarists and lesser-known musicians.
It highlights the work of Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Rais Khan, as well as artists like Jai Ram Acharya, Arvind Mayekar, and Sunil Das.
Their unique performances helped define the melodic style of Hindi cinema. According to Prof. Uppal, this recognition is a major academic milestone for the university.
🎤 Cultural and Social Importance
Researcher Vanita said the popularity of Hindi film music is not only due to singers and composers. The instrumentalists also played a key part in making it timeless.
She added that this work has great social and cultural value. It helps music lovers, students, and researchers learn about the artists who shaped Indian film melodies.
🏛️ Punjabi University’s Ongoing Cultural Efforts
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jagdeep Singh praised Vanita and Prof. Uppal for their dedication. He said that Punjabi University continues to focus on language, literature, art, and culture.
He noted that such projects show the university’s commitment to India’s musical heritage.
The Music Department has also completed other major studies. One notable example is Aman Lata’s research on Qawwali traditions in North India.
